Eatsa, a restaurant chain taking the country by storm, is unlike any fast-food chain. The restaurant, almost fully automated, spits out freshly prepared quinoa bowls in a jiffy. The restaurant is named one of the most influential brands in the industry.

The fast-food chain opened its first location in San Francisco in 2015. It functions essentially like a vending machine or a high-tech automat. While there are real people behind the scenes preparing the food, diners order at an iPad kiosk then wait in front of a wall of glass cubbies where their food will appear when ready.

Hidden behind the wall is where you’ll find the kitchen staff. When an order is ready an employee will place the meal in one of the cubbies and the door to the cubby will then light up with the name of the customer. The process requires zero interaction between customers and workers.

The menu consists of a variety of quinoa and salad bowls costing $6.95. Toppings range from Portobello mushrooms, edamame, corn, salsa, guacamole, cheese, egg, nuts, roasted potatoes, spaghetti squash, pumpkin seeds, falafel, tomatoes and more. Customers create their own bowls from scratch or choose from a number of recommended items. The system remembers every customer’s order, so when they return, the system displays their previous order and recommends new bowls based on their preferences.

Currently, Eatsa is located in Berkeley and San Francisco, Calif.; New York City; and Washington, D.C. Eatsa is open for lunch at all locations and serves breakfast at select restaurants.

Remember to bring a credit or debit card when dining at Eatsa, as the restaurants don’t accept cash.
