If you thought scooters were just for kids, it’s time to rethink this form of transportation. Electric scooters are roaring to life and providing a greener alternative to cars.
Like bikes, scooters are traditionally manual — you are the fuel source. While this is a great way to burn calories while doing something productive, it can be inefficient and leave you looking like a sweaty mess if you’re commuting to work. Get a little extra help from an electric motor to make your next ride a breeze.
Most states require bicycles — electric or not — to ride on the street but some scooters are sidewalk safe. Scooters are a portable alternative to bikes and a more stable choice than skateboards — they combine the best of these modes of transportation and save on both gas money and bus fare.
Of course, an electric scooter is not the right choice for every commute. Most electric vehicles — be they bikes or scooters — have a limited range. Consider your round-trip mileage as well as your charging options. Scooters are slim by design, so they’re probably not the best bet if you need to carry more equipment than will fit in a small backpack.
Still, electric scooters are making tracks on the alternative transportation scene and may just start popping up around your neighborhood.
