Oenophiles need this new wine-focused resource on their radars. Earlier this season, WorldWineryMap.com launched as the most comprehensive wine map ever.
This is an interactive, worldwide database showing users more than 4.3 million vineyards and more than 104,000 wineries across 90 countries. When viewing a vineyard, users can see data such as elevation, solar radiation, slope, soil composition, temperatures and more — allowing oenophiles to more deeply connect with the very elements that determine a wine’s character.
Furthermore, the map lays out the boundaries for wine regions.
“For each parcel, we extracted the exact coordinates and calculated the elevation, slope and aspect using the Copernicus GLO-30 terrain model, then layered climate data on top of that,” explained Matija Gavrilovic, founder, World Winery Map. “For larger parcels, we measure up to 16 control points, which is why elevation is presented as a precise range rather than a single number. We also calculated the slope, rainfall, wind, soil type and geology wherever data was available.”
The tool is made with both industry professionals and wine-loving travelers in mind. Winemakers can claim their vineyard or winery listings, and then inform travelers of their visitor policies, visitor hours and similar information, making the user experience all the more robust.
