New restaurants seem to open every few hours on the streets of New York City, with urban yuppies and hipsters alike clamoring to be the first ones in the door. True foodies know the best food is usually found in the places that had years to perfect their meals. Next time you’re in the Big Apple consider touring the oldest restaurants around.
Fraunces Tavern
Fraunces Tavern came into existence around 1763 and has remained of the city’s oldest dining establishments to this day. Granted, there were a few mishaps in the middle that saw it serving time as a residence and a stop on the New York Freedom Trail. Today, the tavern is back to doing what it does best: serving up delicious food and drink.
Bridge Café
Once a famous brothel, the Bridge Café has gone through many incarnations during its time (since 1797), but it’s a place you could always find a cold beer when in need, even during Prohibition. Today, it stands as a restaurant and eatery for the modern era.
Delmonico’s
Delmonico’s not only has the reputation of being one of the oldest restaurants in NYC, having opened in 1837, but it’s also the birthplace of eggs Benedict. Stop in here to see where the magic happened.
Pete’s Tavern
Formerly Healy’s, this quaint little diner has been in operation for more than 150 years and serves up some of the best beer in the city. The story goes that it operated during Prohibition, with a flower shop up front hiding the beer hall in the back.
