Tips / Destination

The nation’s capital can be a hectic place: Home to some of the country’s worst traffic, high-stress government jobs and an underground Metro system that seems to be constantly under construction, it’s easy to see why Washingtonians might be desperate for some semblance of reprieve. Thankfully, the amount of natural and outdoor space in D.C. makes it easy for professionals to escape the madness and distract themselves with bliss. See below for some of the District’s best spots to unwind.

Theodore Roosevelt Island

The small but enchanting free-entry park is a natural respite between bustling Rosslyn, Va., and D.C.’s energetic Georgetown. Located in the middle of the Potomac River, it is accessible via a footbridge from the Virginia side or by kayak from the D.C. side. Speaking of kayaks…

The Potomac River

Visit Thompson Boat Center below Georgetown to rent kayaks, paddleboards and other small vessels that can take you out onto the Potomac River. Head toward the city for monumental views or away from the city for inescapable nature.

Mount Vernon Trail

Just across the Potomac is an 18.5-mile trail that runs from the Key Bridge all the way to Mount Vernon, the once-home of George Washington. The trail passes through Gravelly Point, a grassy field where you can sit and watch planes take off and land at Reagan National Airport.

Botanic Garden

Celebrate America’s diversity in this Capitol-adjacent garden featuring a collection of plants from all over the world. Breathe deeply as you admire the butterfly garden and listen to the trickling water of the central fountain.
