Whether it’s sheep shearing in Iceland or potato farming in Peru, rolling up your sleeves abroad for food and lodging can be ideal for shoestring travelers. Working abroad can be highly rewarding, culturally immersive and budget friendly. Listed below are four tips to finding the perfect work exchange abroad.
Research and Reach Out
There are many websites, some more reliable than others, dedicated to matching hosts with traveling workers. Offering thousands of opportunities, Helpx and Workaway are two of the most trusted online sites. Visitors can read past worker reviews, job descriptions, expected time commitments and more. For a nominal fee, you’ll also be able to contact the host directly.
Incorporate Your Own Work Interests
Considering there are boundless opportunities, there’s no reason to loathe the work you’ll be doing. Ideally, you should do something you enjoy and, perhaps, feel good listing on a resume. Thinking of a hospitality job in the future? Greet travelers at an eco-lodge in South America. Rather explore the countryside? Pick grapes in a small French vineyard. That said, many work exchangers also enjoy the excitement of the unknown. Never thought you’d herd Criollo horses in Argentina? If you’re physically able and open-minded, why not?
Know Before You Go
It’s important you and your host/employer have clearly defined expectations. Although the work may vary day to day, you need a general outline of how many hours are expected, typical duties and what you receive in return. Remember, it is a work “exchange” and muddled expectations can cause turmoil. Read reviews closely and discuss thoroughly with your host beforehand to ensure both parties understand what’s to be expected.
Budget Wisely
Typically, you’ll be eating and sleeping for free (more accurately, for services rendered). However, you’ll still need cash for exploring the area, any luxury items and, most importantly, leaving. If you don’t even own shoestrings for shoestring travel, then look into a work exchange program with a small stipend. They do exist, but the work may be a little more involved.
Whether it’s to one destination or you’re hopscotching the world, work exchange programs provide a low-cost method for rewarding, experiential travel.
