Many travelers have hitchhiked in the Scottish highlands safely, meeting interesting people along the way. It’s not too uncommon to hitchhike in that area. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule and it can be dangerous to partake. Don’t hitchhike alone and always have a back-up plan or a plan of escape for emergencies.
Hitchhiking is not as popular as it once was, and it’s more likely in the highlands and rural areas than the city areas. Edinburgh can be a great starting point since most travelers begin their adventure there. Traveling in any direction in Scotland becomes easier the quieter the roads become, with locals more willing to give rides to weary travelers.
The highlands and islands are the best for hitchhiking because the people in these areas are trusting and welcoming. However, there are less people on the roads. The wait time for a willing driver is long at times, especially at night. On the islands, the best places to catch a ride are the ferry ports, where there is often a good flow of traffic. Most of the islands have single track roads that are easy to navigate.
Hitchhiking is free and a way to get to know the local people. The experience can be pleasant for visitors. However, there is always the chance something will go wrong
