Tips / Other

With one of the world’s longest life expectancies, Italians are clearly living better than most other nations without trying too hard. Here are a few ways to incorporate elements of an Italian lifestyle into your daily routine for a healthier lifestyle.

Start the day with a caffeine boost. Yes, coffee boosts attention and focus, but coffee beans also contain antioxidants that can help ward off diseases and even prevent the common cold.

Stick to smaller portions. Italians love pastas and pizzas, but they keep servings to a reasonable size. Rather than scarfing down food and eating beyond satiety, they eat slowly to enjoy every bite and stop at a comfortable level of fullness.

Connect in real life. Italians often come together with family members, neighbors or friends over coffee, wine or limoncello for daily catch-ups. Studies show strong social connections and frequent interactions boost endorphins and help prevent feelings of depression and anxiety.

Eat local. Regional dishes vary throughout Italy because of the ingredients found in specific areas. Eating locally made ingredients helps support local farmers and ensures only the freshest foods without the added preservatives required when shipping from one place to another.

Follow a Mediterranean diet. The coastal diet is rich in light servings of fish, olive oil, vegetables and heart-healthy herbs and spices, which all contribute to a healthy heart, mind and cholesterol levels.
