How to Travel Safely in War-Torn Countries

Safety is one of the most important aspects of travel. Travelers must be mindful of their surroundings and make sure they always have a back-up plan in place in case things go awry. This is especially necessary when traveling to a war-torn country. Just because a country is going through a war or civil strife, it doesn’t mean this country is unsafe for travel. There are more precautions to take, but any country on Earth is fair game for travelers that are willing and adventurous, and some travelers have to visit certain locales for business or other obligations.

Be knowledgeable about what is happening in the country before visiting. Is there a war currently? How long has this war been going on? Don’t go anywhere that might jeopardize your safety before knowing all the facts. This is the best way to prepare yourself and choose which places are more dangerous than others. Plan out the trip with all the facts included. Is the hotel in a dangerous area? Are the mountains with the great hiking trail safe? Rule out visiting any place that makes you feel unsafe.

When in the country, never show fear or nervousness about being in a country deemed unsafe. Always try to blend in with the locals and do your best to not draw any attention to yourself. Look up directions and plan an itinerary instead of relying on locals to help. Alerting a local to the fact you’re a tourist could end badly. Always know emergency numbers and the nearest embassy for your country for emergency situations and, if traveling with a group, stay as a group and don’t wander off alone.
