Ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan plans to host a series of sporting events in 2019 throughout the country.
Ōmato National Archery Competition
Held Jan. 13, 2019, the annual archery tournament in Sanjusangen-do, a temple in eastern Kyoto, celebrates the coming of age of Japanese men and women. About 2,000 participants from across the country take part in the event. A master archer fires the first shot, then each contestant has two minutes to shoot two arrows at a target set nearly 200 feet away. Those who hit the target both times move on to the next round. The free event attracts many visitors annually.
Much like the Olympics, the men’s rugby tournament takes place every four years. The top 20 teams from around the world participate. From September through November 2019, 48 matches take place at 12 venues in cities including Kumamoto, Sapporo, Tokyo and Yokohama. The final match will be held Nov. 2, 2019, at Yokohama Stadium in Kanagawa.
Marathons
From January through March 2019, Japan will host several marathons, including the Amakusa Marathon in January, the Kita-Kyushu Marathon in February and the Tokyo Marathon in March.
