LGBT: Phuket

It might seem odd that a country that tends to hold fast to traditionally conservative traditions and values is so welcoming of the gays, but Phuket, Thailand, is a wonderful destination for anyone falling under the LGBT umbrella.

Patong, in particular, is where you’ll find locals most welcoming. The little town on the outskirts of Phuket is known for its rampant party scene along Bangla Road, where the streets are lined with strip clubs, bars and tattoo shops along with throngs of drunken revelers. Most of all, though, this is where you’ll find the hordes of local “ladyboys,” as they prefer to be called.

Thai people believe in three genders, one of which is woman born in a man’s body, which is why you’ll see an abundance of transgendered individuals during your stay here. They’re friendly, open and tons of fun to chill with while you’re in Phuket.

The city is also home to numerous massage parlors catering to gay men, and it should be noted the area is famous for its more sensual explorations than it is traditional massages. Truth be told, Phuket is a better destination for singles than for families.

No matter what exploits you choose to partake in, Phuket is a wonderful destination where gay men and women can be open about their sexuality while enjoying beautiful beaches, lots of sunshine and plenty of establishments where they can feel right at home.
