Safety

There is nothing worse than getting sick while you’re on vacation. Luckily, you can prepare for a lot of the most common sicknesses you may catch while traveling with over-the-counter medicines. It goes without saying that you’ll need to bring any prescription medications you are already taking. But there are a few others you can stash in your pack no matter where you are going.

Diarrhea relief

One of the most common illnesses is traveler’s diarrhea. Be sure to bring diarrhea relief pills such as Pepto Bismol. Off-brand medication can also be found for much cheaper at places like Target. If you know you have a weak stomach, you can consider a stronger medication like Imodium.

Ibuprofen

This is one of the most versatile medicines you can carry. The anti-inflammatory is a pain reliever for any kind of aches from headaches to menstrual cramps. It also works to reduce fever and helps relief pain caused by the flu. Advil and Motrin are two popular choices. Similar medicines you may consider are Aspirin, Tylenol or paracetamol.

Antihistamine

If you have allergies this is a must.

Dramamine

If you are susceptible to motion sickness, make sure you are prepared to combat it.

Antibacterial cream or ointment

At some point you are going to get a cut or a scrape.

Destination-specific medications

Before you travel, make sure you check to see if you will need any special medications for your destination. Malaria, for example, is still a common threat in many parts of the world.

Other useful items to bring are mosquito repellent, suntan lotion, band aids, sleeping aids and condoms. If you forget a medication or find that you need a different one, don’t fret. You will be able to find someone to help wherever you go.
