The Karosta Prison in Liepāja, Latvia, was a naval port prison constructed in 1900 and active for almost 100 years. It closed its doors to prisoners in 1997, but opened them to tourists shortly thereafter. Those willing to risk a night in the supposedly haunted prison can do so as it now operates as a hotel.
Guests get to experience life as a naval prisoner with interactive shows depicting the Soviet era, providing a historical profile of one of the harshest times in the country’s past. You’ll receive a scrumptious lunch in the prison canteen served by Soviet employees, or at least folks playing the part.
If you opt for the “extreme night,” stay you’ll get to stay in an actual prison cell and rough it without any form of luxury. Employees and guests have reported numerous supernatural events in the prison, including strange apparitions running through the halls, electrical bulbs unscrewing themselves, loud bangs throughout the night and more. If you aren’t afraid of a few ghouls scampering around while you sleep it might be worth having a look.
Prices vary throughout the year, but you can find more information on tours and when to stay on the prison’s website.
