While there are many splendid things to see and do in the capital of the Ukraine, Kiev’s Caves Monastery is certainly its crown jewel. Formally known as the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, this picturesque creation is a true work of art that’ll leave you in awe of the imagination and dedication of the monks who once resided here.
There are actually two monasteries located here, one you can visit for free and the other for a nominal fee. The fee is definitely worth the price of admission and I highly recommend it. Whether or not you choose to take a guided tour is up to you, but I decided to forgo it in favor of exploring at my own pace.
There’s so much to see here, it could take an entire day. The domed churches painted in gold are certainly an extraordinary site to see, as are the bell towers you’re free to climb, but the true treasures are the main cathedral and the catacombs. The main cathedral contains a grand painting left by one of the monks, while the caves themselves contain the tombs of the men who used to live here.
There are actually two labyrinths below, Far Caves and Near Caves, and I recommend exploring them both. You’ll find coffins and mummified remains of the monks among burial niches in the walls, many of which provide information about the life of the monk buried there.
It’s somewhat morbid, to be sure, but definitely a fascinating experience like no other. Anyone visiting Kiev must pay this place a visit.
