Planning a wedding is fun, exciting and definitely not for everyone. If you’d rather forego the months of prep and endless questions about details, consider eloping instead. It’s a great way to get out from under the high cost and stress of planning a full-sized event and it’s perfect for those who aren’t really into the idea of being the center of attention. But the simple approach does require a little planning. Here’s what to keep in mind while planning your elopement.
Decide the non-negotiables.
Everyone has a different vision for their wedding day, so talk to your partner about what you both want it to look like. Maybe that means a certain aesthetic, hiring a photographer or just stopping by City Hall during lunch. Whatever is important to you both, make sure you find ways to make it part of the wedding.
Communicate with loved ones.
It can be hard to manage expectations when it comes to something as significant and meaningful as a wedding, but it’s important to keep the lines of communication open between yourselves and your loved ones. Make sure parents, family and friends know about your plans, and if possible find ways to include them. One option: Plan a cookout to celebrate with everyone after you tie the knot.
Check requirements.
Getting swept up in the romance of a quick wedding is fun, but make sure you know what you need to do to make it legal. If you are getting married in your home city, check with City Hall on wait times or necessary paperwork. If you are getting hitched overseas, check with the U.S. Embassy for any fine print or extra hoops you’ll have to jump through to make it legal stateside.
Ignore the haters.
Weddings are one of those things everyone has an opinion about, and no doubt someone will cast some shade on your decision to forego tradition. Just shrug them off and do what is right for you and your partner. Remember: This is your day, and whatever means the most to you is what’s best, regardless of what some random acquaintance or co-worker says.
