Tips / Travel

With all the stress, aches and distractions of traveling, yoga is a great way to help stretch and refocus on the present. But finding opportunities to get in a short practice isn’t always easy, particularly when on the go. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, though. Here are a few tricks to help you practice yoga while traveling.

Craft a few sequences

Before you travel, come up with a few complete sequences that are quick and adaptable. These don’t have to be challenging, and keep in mind you may be running through them at the airport or train station. Keep it simple and short, with the option of using repetition to stretch the sequence to fill different lengths of time.

Dress for it

Choose traveling outfits that will make your practice possible. Looser fits and comfortable pants will make it easier and increase your range of motion. It will be easier to focus on the breath and your movements if you are comfy.

Simplify your tools

It would be great if everyone could carry a high-quality mat, balancing block and strap with them at all times. But that’s just not reasonable. Keep your sequences easy enough that you won’t need extra tools to complete it, and make do with what you have for a mat. Many companies offer thin mats that can fold up for easy travel, but a large scarf will also work to mark off your space and engage with the ritual of the “mat.”

Focus on meditation

There will be a lot going on around you, so make the meditation your main focus. Pay extra attention to the breath, move slowly and deliberately, and try your best to block out distractions. It may not be easy or totally possible, but take the opportunity to roll with the punches as a meditation in and of itself.
