My group and I were flying home from New Orleans in the early afternoon, so we decided to grab brunch on the way to the airport. We arrived at Atchafalaya about 15 minutes before the restaurant opened.
We didn’t have reservations, so once opened, the host brought us to a table outside. These seats are first-come, first-served.
My husband and I decided to try the famous Bloody Mary bar. Our waiter brought us each a pour of vodka, then we went inside to the bar to customize our beverages from a variety of juices, hot sauces, seasonings and picked vegetables.
Everything on the brunch menu sounded delicious and I had a hard time deciding what to order. Instead of one of the entrées, I decided to order some selections a la carte. I ordered sides of the Atchafalaya ham, cream cheese grits and a biscuit with butter and jelly.
Despite being seated outside, the wait staff was attentive, refilling our waters and checking on us often. Our meals were out in a timely manner. The ham was tender, salty and thinly sliced. The grits were perfectly creamy. The biscuit was my least favorite of my meal, as it was a little too dense for my liking. I also stole a few bites of breakfast potatoes from my husband’s plate; they were crispy without being greasy.
Atchafalaya is a perfect spot for creative Louisiana fare, outside of the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter.
