Downtown Los Angeles is home to many historic buildings that are quickly becoming a hotbed of places to be seen in the city. One such building is home to the NoMad Hotel, one of the trendiest hotels in the city.
Located inside a building dating back to 1922, this property originally housed the Bank of Italy. The building, long known as Giannini Place, eventually became the first Bank of America before the Sydell Group purchased it in 2015 to convert it into the first Los Angeles location of New York’s NoMad Hotel.
With its original decor intact and refurbished to all its original glory, the hotel is a testament to the city’s glamorous past.
Rooms, while small, are tastefully decorated in a mix of modern photographic prints paired with retro furnishings. Each room is appointed with its own footed bathtub, either in the bathroom or in the room itself. Luxurious bedding ensures a comfortable and relaxing night sleep.
At the top of this 12-story building is a rooftop bar that serves light snacks and drinks poolside with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding downtown area. Don’t be surprised if you witness some very L.A. experiences while relaxing, such as someone doing tai chi on the roof of a nearby building.
By day, the lobby restaurant serves delicious meals and, by night, it comes alive as a trendsetting bar that takes up both lobby and mezzanine floors.
The hotel has many unique features but perhaps the most impressive attraction is the massive vault located in the basement, a tribute to the building’s banking past. Guests are welcome to visit the vault, which stands wide open; however, instead of banks of safe deposit boxes, guest bathrooms are located within.
