Everywhere you go in Japan you will see references to Shinto, the traditional religion of the country.

The word translates roughly as “the way of the gods,” and the religion is one of the most important in Japan alongside Buddhism. Unlike other religions, Shinto doesn’t have a founder or sacred scriptures in the strict sense of the term, nor does it have any fixed rules.

As such it is less a formal belief system than a way of life, and it is devoted to life in this world. It does not seek to explain the world, but offers a number of rituals that enable believers to communicate with spiritual beings known as “kami.” These spirits are not gods, but they can influence human lives if they are honored correctly, bringing health, wealth and happiness.

All over the country you will see Shinto shrines, and believers often have a mini shrine at home. Little known around the world, Shinto is intensely local and focused on the land of Japan. There is no interest in converting people to Shinto beliefs, and the religion continues to play a part in everyday life in Japan. You can also practice other religions alongside Shinto.

One of the most important Shinto festivals is New Year, known as Oshogatsu, celebrated Jan. 1. On this day it is tradition to visit a shrine and ask the kami to look after you in the new year.
