Silk City

I was in Philadelphia for a concert at The Electric Factory with a small group and we wanted to have dinner before seeing the show. We decided to go to the nearby restaurant Silk City.

A renovated classic diner, Silk City is a restaurant/nightclub/beer garden hybrid. The beer garden is open during the warmer months, and there is a separate bar and dance floor space for the late-night crowd. On the night of our visit, our goal was simple: food. We arrived during dinnertime on a weeknight, without a reservation. The hostess informed us it would be about a 30-minute wait, so we decided to start with a beer at the bar. Silk City offers an ample drink selection, including local beers on tap or bottles. Before we had time to finish our drinks, our table was ready.

Silk City offers elevated diner-style comfort food. The menu includes a variety of salad, sandwich and entrée options. I knew I wanted a sandwich and eventually decided on the eggplant Parmesan sandwich. When it arrived, I was slightly disappointed with the bread to eggplant ratio. After taking a few bites of the sandwich intact, I removed the garlic ciabatta and ate the remaining eggplant with my fork and knife. This was a preferable method, as I was able to really taste the flavors of the rich marinara, mozzarella and provolone atop the grilled eggplant.

Silk City is a fun place for dinner, dancing or drinking outdoors.
