It is that time of year again: Time for the annual Christmas market to burst onto the Chicago scene. For the last 22 years, on the Friday before Thanksgiving, a unique experience unfolds on Daley Plaza right in the middle of the Loop. Small huts are constructed and slowly decorated with Christmas cheer. A tree is put up and lights are strung around the plaza with care. If you do not know to expect this, you might emerge from the City Clerk’s office after paying a fine for something you did not realize existed only to have your grumpiness washed away by the sight of this tiny village.

Many places like New York or Baltimore have an “antiques row” area of town where dealers are established. Here, the novice or expert buyer can peruse for business or pleasure to their hearts content, whenever they please. Chicago does not offer this kind of compartmentalized experience.
