Talking to your doctor can make anyone nervous, but particularly when it’s time to talk about health concerns or vaccines needed for international travel. No one wants to get sick while on an adventure, and where do you even start the conversation? Here are a few things to keep in mind when you head to the doctor’s office before your trip.
Start the conversation early.
Some medicines and vaccines require a little time to kick in, so make sure you schedule a consultation as early as possible. This will also give you time to find a specialist if your usual doctor doesn’t work with particular medicines or vaccines.
Do some research.
Some countries may have particular vaccines or treatments required before someone can enter the country, so hunt around on the web. Embassy websites often have this kind of information available. Also check on what diseases or viruses are common in your destination country to see what you need to talk to your doctor about.
Make a list.
Include both questions that came up during your research and personal health concerns. This will help you take notes during your appointment, and you will be sure to cover everything you need to know before hitting the road.
Don’t sign on without asking questions.
If your doctor lists numerous pills and shots to get before your trip, don’t be afraid to ask if they are all necessary. Sometimes the probability of getting a particular bug isn’t high, or isn’t any higher than in your home country. In that case, don’t feel obligated to shell out the cash.
