In 2016, Thailand welcomed a record number of foreign visitors — some 32.59 million, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

The announcement also showed Thailand earned 2.52 trillion baht (around $71.4 billion) from tourism, up 11 percent from 2015. Projections for 2017 are strong, with the country looking to bring in around 733 billion baht, or $20.7 billion in the first quarter alone, exceeding initial projections.

A report from the World Tourism Organization ranked Thailand as the 11th most-visited country in the world, based on 2015 figures, showing the country is consistently popular with visitors from around the world.

And Bangkok was named the most visited city in the world, according to Mastercard’s Global Destinations Cities Index. Some 21.5 million people spent at least one night there, more than London and Paris each.

“Thailand is still a popular destination. Stability and improvements in the economy mean more foreign tourist arrivals. There’s clearly demand, and it’s up to us to accommodate everyone who wants to come,” said Yuthasak Supasorn, governor, Tourism Authority of Thailand.
