In 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew non-stop from New York to Paris. In 2016, Fedor Konyukhov made a non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe in a hot-air balloon. It’s safe to say aviation has come a long way.

The focus has always been on flying father and staying airborne longer. While long-haul flights have the appeal of the exotic, shorter routes are minimal.

November launched the world’s shortest international commercial flight, an eight-minute hop, 13-mile trip, between Switzerland’s St. Gallen-Altenrhein (ACH) and Germany’s Friedrichshafen (FDH).

Loganair services Westray (WRY) to Papa Westray (PPW), Scotland, for two miles. The shortest regular commercial flight takes just more than one minute, but, on occasion, has been as short as 53 seconds, depending on tail wind.

Kegata to Apowo, Indonesia, is also a short flight totaling 1.3 miles. The service, possibly the shortest commercial flight, is not a regular connection and carries fare-paying passengers.

The shortest intercontinental regular commercial flight is from Tangier, Morocco (TNG), to Gibraltar (GIB), a British Overseas Territory. Royal Air Maroc services the 43-mile flight.

The shortest flight between two national capitals is Kinshasa (FIH), the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Brazzaville (OKG), the Republic of Congo. Camair-Co and ASKY airlines service the 16-mile flight.

The shortest regular commercial flight in North America is from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to Niagara District Airport in Canada. The 32-mile flight only takes 15 minutes to fly in a straight line across the water.

The world’s longest flight is from Delhi (DEL) to San Francisco (SFO); Air India services the 9,400-mile flight. The other longest flights are as follows:Emirates services the Auckland (AKL)–Dubai (DBX), 8,824-mile flight; Qantas services the Dallas (DFW)–Sydney (SYD), 8,578-mile flight; United Airlines services the San Francisco–Singapore (SIN), 8,446-mile flight; Delta services the Johannesburg (JNB)–Atlanta (ATL), 8,439-mile flight; Etihad services the Abu Dhabi (AUH)–Los Angeles (LAX), 8,390-mile flight; Emirates services the Dubai–Los Angeles, 8,339-mile flight; Saudia services the Jeddah (JED)–Los Angeles, 8,332-mile flight; Qatar Airways services the Doha (DOH)–Los Angeles, 8,306-mile flight; and Emirates services the Dubai–Houston (IAH), 8,168-mile flight.
