Edinburgh International Film Festival (June 17–28)
Founded in 1947, the EIFF is one of the world’s best film festivals. It attracts more than 1,400 international filmmakers, journalists and industry reps each year. Hosted over 11 days, the Scottish festival has held premieres of some of the biggest films in recent years, including Little Miss Sunshine and The Hurt Locker. As well as mainstream film, the festival showcases animation, shorts, documentaries and international film. 2015 offered 164 films from 36 countries, and 2016 is looking just as bright.
Rooftop Films (June 4–Aug, 22)
Mark Elijah founded Rooftop Films in 1997 when he began hosting screenings on the roof of his East Village apartment building. New Yorkers can find a host of independent, alternative and underground screenings at this incredible film festival, hosted beneath the shining stars in NYC. In 2011, it hosted 30,000 people at 47 events, generating an institution-like reputation. It hosts shorts, animations and comedies from Sundance and other bigger festivals.
San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival (June 18–28)
The SF International LGBT Film Festival has brought LGBT filmmakers and cinema to a global audience since 1977. The Frameline Completion Fund also offers guidance and help to LGBT filmmakers in finishing or editing their work. The festival expects to attract up to 60,000 each year. Last year showcased I Am Michael, the story of a gay rights advocate who renounced homosexuality, starring James Franco. Also featured was Out to Win, a documentary about LGBT athletes that features interviews with Jason Collins, Wade Davis and Brittney Griner.
