Destinations / North America

Richmond, Virginia, has seen a major boom in breweries in recent years, but the food scene shouldn’t be overlooked. Here are the state capital’s top new restaurants where you can pair your perfect pint with a delectable dinner.

Alewife

Located in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood, Alewife touts itself as “mid-Atlantic seafood influenced by the Chesapeake Bay and foodways of Virginia.” With sustainability and local ingredients in mind, the restaurant specializes in both on-the-bone and off-the-bone sea and land eats, like duck breast with sunchokes and golden raisins or scallops with buttermilk soubise and squid ink vin.

El Pope

With pupusas for $2.50 each and delivery available, this cozy Latin American spot has been open for a year, but lately, word has gotten out. A full bar as well as table and booth seating offer enough space for a casual meal.

L’Opossum

Although not technically “new,” L’Opossum is quickly becoming a staple Richmond establishment. Crowned Best Restaurant in the South by Southern Living magazine in 2018, L’Opossum combines French staples with Southern touches, such as escargot with ham biscuits or French onion dip with pecan-currant rye bread.

Slingshot Social Game Club

If you’re looking for something a little more casual and a lot more interactive, Slingshot is your place. Try your hand at Superskee, a larger version of the classic arcade game Skeeball, or Extreme Duckpin Bowling, all with a side of bar eats like cornfield hushpuppies, wings and flatbreads.
