Tips / Travel

The internet is rife with cheap travel tips and hacks that can help you achieve a longstanding dream of your ideal vacation, but there are some aspects of travel that shouldn’t be skimped on, especially in terms of safety and efficiency. Below are some examples of travel moments when it pays to spend a little extra.

If you’re a light sleeper: Booking a dorm room in a hostel can be a great cheap alternative to pricey hotel rooms, but if you’re a light sleeper, concerned for your safety or not a fan of crowding into small spaces with strangers, it may be worth shelling out a few extra bucks for a private room. Some hostels have this option, with access to a shared bathroom.

If you’re claustrophobic: As more and more airlines begin to charge passengers for seat selection, travelers on a budget forgo the option to pay for a seat and thus risk the possibility of ending up in a middle seat at the back of the plane. If easy aisle/bathroom access or a sturdy window upon which to lay your head for a nap is important for you, consider paying for a seat in advance for peace of mind.

If you’ve overpacked: Public transit is undoubtedly the cheapest way to get around in most cities, but if you’re traveling with a massive suitcase plus a carry-on, it may make more sense to grab a cab or rideshare. Although it costs more, it’ll help you save time and stress from schlepping your bags up and down subway stairs.

If you’re worried you’ll miss your connection: Allow at least two to three hours between flights to make your connection, even if this means paying a bit more than the flight with the 45-minute connection. This should give you plenty of time to deplane, find your connecting gate and board your next flight, possibly with time for a bathroom or coffee stop.
