JG Melon

This cozy pub located on the Upper East Side is famous for its no-frills cheeseburger. The cash-only establishment serves up a simple griddled beef patty with American cheese on a lightly toasted potato bun. The fanciest they’ll get is adding bacon and/or sautéed mushrooms for an additional cost.

Burger Joint

Hidden in the Le Parker Meridien hotel in Midtown, Burger Joint is a tiny, cash-only counter selling simple, tasty burgers. The menu is simple: hamburgers or cheeseburgers with classic topping options (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles) and fries. A Greenwich Village outpost recently opened.

Corner Bistro

Corner Bistro is a great late-night spot in West Greenwich Village, with a divey atmosphere and great, simple burgers. The tasty but messy Bistro Burger is a standout; the eight-ounce patty comes topped with bacon and American cheese.

Minetta Tavern

For a famed $30 burger, order the Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern. The decadent burger is made with an eight-ounce blend of prime dry-aged beef cuts and topped with caramelized onions.

Superiority Burger

The only vegetarian spot on our list, Superiority Burger offers flavorful veggie burgers topped with unique ingredients. Burger patties are quinoa-based. Vegan options are available.

Honorable mention: Shake Shack began as a food cart in Madison Square Park and has now expanded to more than 100 locations in the United States and abroad. Enjoy the signature ShackBurger and one of the rotating milkshakes.
