Copenhagen is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, but it’s still worth a visit for travelers on a budget. Here are a few wallet-friendly activities that will still give you a taste of the Danish capital.
Christiana
The alternative, no-rules neighborhood on the south side of the city is just a few bridges away but feels like worlds away. The hippie neighborhood is known for great street food, colorful murals, varieties of marijuana you can buy straight from growers and a laid-back atmosphere where anything goes.
Urban Beaches
Sidle up to the harbor during the summer for a dip in the river at one of the world’s cleanest urban swimming spots. When the sun is out, you’ll find residents spreading out towels and refreshing themselves with cold beers while boats pass by. The only thing missing is sand in your bathing suit.
Walking Tour
Multiple companies host free walking tours of the city, offering a bit of history, culture and insight into the Danish people. Most tours depart from City Hall (a.k.a. Radhaus); just look for the brightly colored umbrellas. Some require reservations ahead of time, so book before you arrive. At the end, tip your guide what you feel the tour was worth.
Parks
Copenhagen has no shortage of green space. From Fredriksburg’s sprawling paths to Nørrebro’s slim yet tranquil urban oasis in the middle of a city block, parks pop up in nearly every neighborhood and are the perfect setting for an affordable picnic.
Rent a Bike
Copenhagen is home to more bicycles than people, so join the locals by navigating the city on two wheels. Prices start at about 50 DKK per day (about $7.50).
