The small Central American nation of Costa Rica has become something of a haven for nature lovers.
With jungle sandwiched between the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, Costa Rica has something for everyone. These eco-lodges offer an environmentally friendly way to experience the natural wonders of the country.
Rara Avis Rainforest Lodge and Reserve
One of the first private reserves in the country sits in primary forest and has been run by sustainable tourism expert Amos Bien since 1983. If you are interested in seeing how sustainable tourism should be done, this is the place to be.
Rancho Margot
The accommodations may be rustic, but this eco-lodge cum self-sufficient organic farm offers a huge amount of activities, from horse riding to rappelling to yoga. All food served is grown on site in this farm-to-table operation.
Danta Corcovado Lodge
This lodge is found on the isolated Osa Peninsula close to the Corcovado National Park. As well as hiking and exploring, you can spot dolphins in the Golfo Dulce before relaxing in the beautiful surroundings.
Hotel Belmar
This classy property has been open since 1985, and offers spectacular views as well as an impressive commitment to sustainability. Four-wheel-drive tours are discouraged, and the surrounding area is made for walking.
Selva Bananito Lodge and Reserve
On the Caribbean side of Costa Rica is this biological reserve, with accommodations in wooden cabins built on stilts. The nearby Pacuare River is great for rafting, while the lodge is also close enough to the sea for visitors to enjoy the Tortuguero National Park.
