Looking for some free activities in Edinburgh to offset your other travel costs? Here’s how to see some of the best in the city without breaking the bank.

The National Museum of Scotland

Like the national museums in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of Scotland is free to the public. The museum is broken out into several different galleries, with focuses including natural history, Scottish history, art, design and fashion.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a mile from the city center, but you’d think you’ve completely left the city altogether. The 72 acres of botanic gardens are hailed as some of the finest in the world. Beyond the natural finery, you can also glimpse views of Edinburgh Castle and the city skyline.

Greyfriars Kirkyard

If you fancy something spooky, Greyfriars Kirkyard should definitely be a spot on your itinerary. This historic graveyard features a number of notable residents dating back to the late 1500s. The church itself was founded in 1561. You’ll find several monuments throughout and remnants of long-ago issues, such as the mortsafes, once used to deter grave robbers who supplied Edinburgh Medical College with fresh corpses.

Arthur’s Seat

Make sure you have your hiking shoes on for this one. Within walking distance of the city, you come to the base of Arthurs Seat, an ancient volcano also the site of a preserved fort. About an hour’s climb, the views from the top are magnificent and not to be missed.

The Royal Mile

For superb people watching and a glimpse of some of the best parts of Edinburgh, walk the Royal Mile. While some bits are overrun with tourists, you’ll still find plenty of space to explore along the entire length of this straight shot, which stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace.
