The rolling green hills of England are the stuff of folklore, and there is no better way to explore them than on foot. Whichever region of England you find yourself in, you’re never far from a spellbinding country walk. The following walks are all within easy striking distance of London, so you won’t have to travel too far to get your dose of the bucolic English countryside.
The Crab & Winkle Way runs along a disused railway track from Canterbury to Whitstable through the pretty countryside of Kent. The county is known as the Garden of England with good reason, and this trail ends on the coast near Whitstable Harbour — perfect for those who want some sea air.
Another great option is the South Downs Way, which runs for 100 miles from Hampshire to East Sussex. At points, the horizon stretches as far as 40 miles over rolling hills and the English Channel beyond.
Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire offers great panoramic views of surrounding farmland, and all just 36 minutes by train from London Euston station. The village of Tring offers a great spot to start your walk.
If you don’t want to venture too far away from London, head to Epping Forest in Essex. Accessible from Theydon Bois station on the London Underground, Epping Forest is a true paradise just outside the city limits.
Down on the south coast, Hastings has become a center for arty types that have regenerated this historic town. Take off into the countryside around the town on the Hastings Circular, which takes in Hastings Country Park and passes along some spectacular coastal paths.
There are many wonderful walks in the English countryside, and this is just a tiny selection. Sometimes the best option is to strike out and ask the locals for their favorite spots.
