The Andes mountain range is hugely impressive as it runs through the South American nation of Peru. Trekking is a popular pursuit in many areas, with hikes to suit visitors of differing abilities. Perhaps the most famous hike in Peru is the Inca Trail, a four-day jaunt to the Incan city of Machu Picchu. You’ll have to book months in advance as places are limited.

The city of Huaraz is a great jumping off point for hikes in the Cordillera Blanca. Many visitors take on the Santa Cruz trek, a demanding hike that can vary in length from four to eight days depending on the route. A good standard of fitness is recommended for hiking in this area.

The Cordillera Huayhuash is another trek near Huaraz, and even more demanding than the Cordillera Blanca. This nine-day monster route is one of the hardest treks in the Americas, and covers 115 kilometers. There are a number of 6,000-meter-plus peaks along the way to boot.

If you don’t want to battle the crowds at Machu Picchu, take on the hike to another lost city called Choquequirao. Some companies offer this trek over four days, and it’s recommended for the amazing scenery as well as impressive ruins.
