The vast, historically significant and exciting city of Amsterdam has plenty to offer its LGBTQ visitors. Amsterdam openly promotes gay and lesbian rights, hosts events such as Amsterdam Gay Pride and is home to scores of gay-friendly bars, restaurants, clubs, shops and hotels.
Did you know the first gay bar in Amsterdam opened in 1927, during a time when homosexuality was still considered to be an illness? That bar is Cafe t’ Mandje, and to this day, it stands as a place where everyone is welcome to be themselves. Other LGBT venues include the unapologetically outlandish Club Church (recognized as Amsterdam’s premiere cruise club), as well as Cafe Saarein on the lesbian scene and The Queen’s Head.
Through the end of June, the Bijbels Museum is hosting a daring display entitled “I believe I am gay.” The exhibition consists of 37 photographic portraits of homosexuals living in the Netherlands who are also practicing Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists. The Gay and Lesbian Summer Film Festival is a two-month city-wide celebration beginning in June. Check out iamsterdam.com for even more LGBT art exhibitions, celebrations and festivals.
If you’re thinking of heading to town, consider a stay at a gay-friendly hotel, like Amistad Hotel. They are noted for their proximity to many gay shops, bars and museums, and also offer couple’s penthouses and apartments within walking distance of the main hotel. Hotel Freeland and Hotel Amstelzicht are also friendly and open to the gay community.
