Exploring Bissau can be a cheap day out and you can have a lot of fun on $100. Here’s how to do it.
Start the day with a coffee and some fruit from one of the street vendors ($2) and then wander into Bissau Velho, the old town, to marvel at the crumbling colonial architecture. Stroll around the outside of the Fortaleza d’Amura, an old fort still used by the military, and then walk over to O Bistro for lunch.
This Belgian-owned restaurant serves great fish, pasta and crepes, and is known for its great service. Sit inside under the air conditioning or grab a table on the veranda, but make sure to bring bug spray ($20).
In the afternoon take a walk around the Bandim market, where you will find all sorts of stuff for sale, and then check out Cabaz di Terra, a store that sells traditional handicrafts that make great souvenirs, or Centro de Arte Juvenil, which also focuses on arts and crafts.
After that, sit down for a drink and dinner at Papa Loca, where the extensive menu means there will be something for everyone to enjoy ($10). If you want to continue the night, go for a dance at X-Klub, one of the most famous night spots in town (drinks $4).
