Set along the Garonne River in southwestern France is the small-but-thriving city of Bordeaux, the greater region of which is known for its world-famous wine. When you’re not vineyard-hopping in the French countryside, take some time to enjoy the city proper and see what makes Bordeaux a quintessential southern French town.
A morning in Bordeaux must begin with a croissant and café au lait, followed by a stroll along the river. Before the crowds descend upon the riverfront, capture a few Instagram-worthy photos of the reflecting “pool” (le miroir d’eau) in front of the Place de la Bourse.
Continue north along the river until you reach La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux’s recently opened wine museum. Book a tasing workshop any day at 4:30 p.m. for $13.40, or skip the line and buy a ticket for the permanent exhibition and a wine tasting for $22. For only a few more dollars, reserve your spot on a 90-minute, wine-tasting cruise that departs from the museum each afternoon.
Happy hour kicks off at Couleur Café, right around the corner from Saint-André de Bordeaux cathedral, where you can split a bottle of wine and a charcuterie/cheese board with a companion for less than $22 and spend the evening people-watching at one of the plentiful terrace tables.
After you’ve tasted every type of Bordeaux wine that exists, soak up the alcohol with a hearty meal at La Brasserie des Chartrons, which serves French-style favorites like oysters, duck, beef and foie gras with onions.
