In the heart of the Spanish region of Andalusia is a small but historically significant city called Córdoba, once the most powerful city in Western Europe and the site of the continent’s first university. A tour of Andalusia in Southern Spain should not omit Córdoba, a city ripe with Roman ruins and Moorish architectural influences. Although the entire city and its most famous attraction, La Mezquita, can be seen in a day, it would be a great disservice to forego exploring the rest of the charming town.
Begin the day with a café con leche and a plate of churros at any of the city’s quintessential bodegas, such as Churros Bar Marta. Spend the morning strolling through the city’s cobblestone streets and snapping photos of the diverse forms of architecture and design throughout Cordoba’s historic center. Fuel up with lunch in the courtyard of El Patio Cordobes before heading to La Mezquita, Córdoba’s pride and joy.
Entrance to La Mezquita is only €8 without a guided tour. History and architecture buffs, however, may find value in splurging for the ticket that features an English-language tour (tickets €37). The second ticket option includes admission to the Palace of the Christian Kings, the Great Mosque-Cathedral and the Synagogue of Córdoba.
As dusk approaches, make your way to the Jewish Quarter to view the synagogue at sunset before paying €30 for a dinner/flamenco show at Artes y Sabores. Although a bit pricey, the atmosphere and authenticity of the show cannot be beat.
