Hiroshima is a wonderful city to visit and makes a perfect stop on a loop itinerary from Tokyo. Here is how you can see it on a budget.

It can be hard to find good breakfast options in Japan, where most people eat the first meal of the day at home. However, pancakes have long been a morning staple, and you can get some of the best in town at Café Fusha AQ’A, in the Hiroshima Bus Center ($15).

After you eat, head to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, where you can learn about the impact of the atomic bomb dropped on the city by the U.S. Air Force during World War II ($1). It will take a few hours to get around, and it’s highly recommended.

For lunch, try Lopez Okonomiyaki, where Guatemalan chef Fernando Lopez makes some of the best traditional omelet-pancakes in town. The dish, okonomiyaki, is famous in Hiroshima, and Lopez spent years learning the trade ($15).

In the afternoon, take the ferry to Miyajima Island, where you can look back over to the city. If you are here in autumn, it’s the best place to see the leaves changing color. Don’t miss the giant gate that sits in the water just offshore (ferry $5).

For dinner, get ramen at Fujiwara Ramen, or try the local favorite tsukemen. This is a kind of soup-less ramen that comes with a dipping sauce, and Hiroshima residents love it ($15). Suitably fortified, head out to the Nagarekawa part district and get some drinks ($5 each).
