Palm Springs is somewhat of a hotspot for celebrities looking to get away, along with rich retirees looking to settle down away from the hustle and bustle of Southern California. As such, it has somewhat of an undue reputation as being on the pricey side.
Tourism is a major component of the city’s income, so there are hotels everywhere. Unfortunately, finding a clean, affordable one on the weekend is not going to happen. Your best bet is to pop in during the week and search for a place just outside the city limits in a place like Desert Palms, just up the road. You can find reasonable rates at around $45 a night. Better yet, pitch a tent at one of the many campgrounds surrounding nearby Joshua Tree for just a measly $10.
In town, all of the dining establishments are fairly good choices, but Kalura Trattoria is one of the best. They provide an authentic Italian experience (the staff is full of natives) along with superb food. It’s a small area, so expect to be in close quarters with other guests and experience a long wait, but their lasagna is to die for. A meal for two should cost no more than $30.
Palm Springs nightlife leaves a lot to be desired; your best bet is probably to stay in. However, if you come on a Thursday, the city holds a weekly festival downtown showcasing arts and craft from around the area that is free.
One area of interest is the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. The Tram takes you up the mountain and gives you a wonderful view of the surrounding area. If you purchase the Ride and Dine ticket for $36, it covers the ride and the cost of dining out at Peak’s Restaurant at the top of the mountain.
Palm Springs is known as a place to kick back, so to save money we recommend that’s exactly what you do. Walk around, see the sights and enjoy the leisurely atmosphere of this classic desert town.
