The Dutch capital is renowned for its canals, coffee shops and cultural spaces. Here’s your guide to spending a day in the city on a budget.
For breakfast, one of the best spots is Bakers and Roasters in the De Pijp district. Open from 8.30 a.m., this smart little spot serves New Zealand coffee and Brazilian-inspired food. It might sound like an unlikely mix, but it’s delicious. A variety of breakfasts are available from around $12.
Belly full, take a walk around the famous Amsterdam flower markets before dipping into the Anne Frank museum ($10). A site not to be missed, the house played host to the Jewish family as they hid from Nazi occupiers during World War II.
When you are feeling peckish, check out Bazar in De Pijp. This former church has been converted into an Arabic-kitsch restaurant serving a North African-inspired menu. The sandwiches come highly recommended, as does the hummus with veal ($16 with a drink).
Head off to the Heineken brewery experience to find out how one of the most well-known lagers in the world is made. The visit includes a trip around the old brewery and a glass of Heineken in the spectacular bar ($16).
Take a wander around the canals and stop in at the FOAM Photography Museum. Entrance costs $11, and it’s a great space that shows off the work of contemporary photographers as well as hosting lectures and events.
As night falls, stop for a bite to eat at Hap Hmm, a canteen-style restaurant that serves up traditional Dutch cooking. You can get a main meal for around $7, which leaves more money for a few drinks at bars Bloemers, Café Brandon and Café Soundgarden (around $5 per drink).
