Looking to join a frequent-flyer program and maybe earn some miles toward a free trip? WalletHub broke down the best frequent-flyer programs for 2020. WalletHub examined the frequent-flyer programs for the 10 largest domestic airlines, comparing them across 23 key metrics.
The results?
WalletHub found Delta Air Lines SkyMiles to be the best frequent-flyer program in the country, followed by United Airlines MileagePlus, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards and JetBlue Airways TrueBlue.
WalletHub found Delta Air Lines SkyMiles proves to be the most rewarding for light, average and frequent travelers across the board. WalletHub defined light travelers as those with an annual airfare budget of $574; average travelers as those with an annual airfare budget of $3,587; and frequent travelers as those with an annual airfare budget of $6,612.
However, WalletHub also found Alaska Airlines offers the most rewards value overall, at $20.23 per $100 spent. Hawaiian Airlines came in second in terms of rewards value, at $16.20 per $100 spent.
The good news regardless of the type of traveler you are? The frequent-flyer programs for four major airlines (Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue) now do not allow your miles to expire just because of account inactivity. Additionally, four of 10 major U.S. airlines will retroactively credit loyalty program members with miles for a flight, up to 12 months after the flight is taken, and seven of the 10 largest U.S. airlines allow rewards program members to earn and redeem miles with partner carriers (the outlying airlines that do not allow this are Southwest, Spirit and Sun Country).
