It’s no secret that, when you want to rent an Airbnb property, the initial per-night fee isn’t what you’re actually going to pay. After all the taxes and fees have been tacked on, your actual accommodations cost can be far higher than you originally assumed.
The good news? Airbnb fees aren’t the same everywhere, and Forbes Advisor looked at 32,000 Airbnb listings to find out where Airbnb fees are the worst.
According to the study, fees can raise the cost of your Airbnb rental by about 36 percent, with cleaning fees accounting for about 11 percent of your subtotal, service fees accounting for about 15 percent and taxes for about 10 percent.
The average cleaning fee is $160 for a five-night stay, or $32 per day. For the lowest cleaning fees, look to properties in Cleveland, Ohio. To avoid the highest cleaning fees, though, stay clear of Telluride, Colorado. Destinations with the highest average cleaning fees include Phoenix, Arizona; Atlanta, Georgia; and Orlando, Florida.
As for destinations throughout the country with the highest total fees, these include Atlanta, Georgia; Phoenix, Arizona; and Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
However, believe it or not, some Airbnb properties still don’t charge any cleaning fee at all. Forbes Advisor reported one other study found 15 percent of properties listed across both Airbnb and VRBO do not currently charge cleaning fees.
