A growing movement from Sweden is sweeping the globe and placing scrutiny and blame on travelers. “Flight shaming” demands travelers stop flying to lessen environmental damage. More than just a rally cry, markets like Sweden are already seeing more people choosing train travel to avoid flight shame.

However, is flight shaming valid or overblown? According to IATA, air travel is responsible for 3 percent of all global carbon emissions and is expected to grow 3.5 percent per year. IATA also forecasts 8.2 billion air travelers by 2037. It’s safe to assume air travel will only continue growing, as well as harmful emissions.

Flight shaming also aligns with growing trends demanding more sustainable travel options. Travelers are willing to spend more on sustainable options and are more concerned about their impact. However, flight shaming is at odds with the meteoric rise of travel influencers calling others to quit their job, travel the world and experience life to the fullest.

A compromise could be found by adopting a travel state of mind, no matter the distance. Looking to travel options within a few hours’ drive, slowing down and taking the train or opting for more local vacations are all ways to lessen reliance on air travel.
