Tips / Travel

Maybe you’re not cut out for camping in the woods, but you should still be prepared for a cabin retreat in winter. Here’s what should be on your packing list.

Sleeping

Be sure to have plenty of blankets and pillows available, even if you’re renting. Large groups will leave some people on the pull-out couch and the cold wooden floor, so pack some sleeping bags or mattress pads to make your stay more comfortable.

Fire

Maintaining a fire will require matches and lots of newspaper to get it going. Check to see if your cabin has a fireplace or wood stove and if they supply firewood. Wet surroundings could leave you out in the cold, so buying a few bundles from the store can be a good idea, depending on the weather. Gas and lighter fluid is also helpful, especially if you’re using gas lanterns.

Food and Drink

The cabin’s faucet might be drawing well water, so if you’re not carrying enough bottles, be sure to bring an extra large pot for melting snow. Not all cabins will be equipped with a fully stocked kitchen, so you might have to bring your own cooking utensils and frying pan.

Attire

Dress in layers, especially if you plan on doing strenuous outdoor activity like snowshoeing that puts you at risk for overheating in a thick parka. Wool socks and waterproof hiking boots are for the outdoors, so bring a pair of slippers so you don’t track mud and snow inside.
