Heading overseas to study for a semester? That’s wonderful! You’re going to have the time of your life, learning, growing, exploring and soaking in the culture and customs of your chosen destination. Just as a reminder, here’s a few thing you might not want to forget amidst your excitement.
Light Travel Wear: Being away from home for a semester is an exciting opportunity, though without the security of a home base, you’ll want your gear to reflect your transient lifestyle. Stock up on primarily portable gear and gadgets.
- A small hip bag, fanny pack or hidden pocket you can keep close to your person for your passport, money, camera (If you’re staying in hostels, you’ll want to sleep with your essentials on you.)
- Sturdy boots you’ll wear everywhere you go
- A fleece “shell” (like a Northface) you can wear under a light jacket for extra warmth
Weather and Terrain Gear: Even if you’re home base is sunny, warm Spain, who’s to say you’re not going to pack up and trek to London for a weekend?
- A sturdy rain jacket or parka. (Carrying an umbrella would be unnecessary, added weight.)
- A waterproof cover for your bag/backpack.
- Waterproof boot liners
- Thick wool socks, gloves and hat
- Sunglasses
Little Things You Won’t Want To Forget: Learn from the mistakes of those slightly older, but not much wiser than you, and pack these itty bitty essentials first.
- Tweezers and nail clippers
- Shaving cream and razor
- Electronic wall plug adaptors for your computer or phone charger
- Combination lock, to keep your gear safe if you stay in a hostel
- A light blanket or hand towel
- Earbuds or headphones
