Jet lag is a cruel byproduct of travel, capable of robbing you of the start of a long-awaited trip while you catch up on enough sleep to feel human again or cause you to groggily trudge through a day of sightseeing when all you want to do is curl up in bed. In fact, one hotel group recently conducted a survey showing one in five Americans would actually avoid going on a trip if they thought jet lag would affect them. Based on these results, they decided to proactively address this joy-stealing travel barrier.

YOTEL, the London-based hospitality group operating 14 city center hotels and six airport hotels, partnered with human performance R&D company Fount to stave off jet lag and get vacations started sooner. Through its research with fighter pilots and Navy SEALs, Fount discovered pressure changes encountered during flights cause the immune system to overreact, which prevents the circadian rhythm from resetting and can also result in low energy and mood, brain fog, restlessness, joint pain, and digestive issues.
To offset the effects of air travel, YOTEL launched a campaign called Land like a Local. On request, staff pre-stocks guestrooms with Fount’s FlyKitt Rescue kits, which contain all-natural supplements believed to decrease inflammation, restore natural immunity, and boost both energy and sleep. The ingredients are the same as in supplements used by Olympic sports teams and elite military. The kit includes six packs and guests are instructed to take the first pack of supplements with dinner on the day they arrive, another right before bedtime, and four more at prescribed times the following day.

If you’re also worried about the lingering effects on your skin from jetlag; dry, recycled airplane air during a long-haul flight; and all those cocktails in the airline lounge, YOTEL also has you covered. Through Urban Jungle, the hotel brand’s beauty partner, YOTEL offers hotel guests Skin Recovery Kits with Dust It Off Exfoliator, a gentle but effective powder exfoliator to slough off dry skin, and a plumping serum to erase fine lines and restore glow. Guestrooms are also outfitted with Lumie Lights and tailored temperature control to encourage rest and get your circadian rhythm in check, so you can get to enjoying your trip that much sooner.
The kits are available as an add-on experience starting at $29 and are available at YOTEL locations in Amsterdam, Singapore, London City, New York Times Square and Istanbul.
YOTEL Amsterdam is a perfect place to put these tools to the test. Its location in Amsterdam Noord is close to the sights without the hassle of driving or finding parking in city center. The canals, cafés, red light district and other sites are just a free, five-minute boat ride away on a ferry that departs every few minutes from early morning until late evening.
The hotel offers contactless check-in if you wish, and has a comfy and inviting workspace in the lobby. DECK has indoor and outdoor dining overlooking the Tolhuis Canal, serving Dutch specialties including bitterballen, beer-marinated chicken, and Kroket sandwiches—with fries, naturally—as well as a daily happy hour. Guests who book directly through YOTEL.com can rent a bike for free on the day of arrival and assimilate into Amsterdam’s ubiquitous bicycle culture.
Accommodations come in several categories, all designed in a modern, minimalist and compact style. The Premium Queen, for example, has a desk, customizable LED lighting from LTECH and bath amenities from the aforementioned Urban Jungle. And because you’ll need a restful night’s sleep — not from jet lag thanks to its new initiative, but from all that walking taking in the sights of Amsterdam — there’s an adjustable SmartBed to catch those precious zzzs so you’re ready to take on your next adventure the following day.
