As every traveler knows, TSA regulations prohibit liquids and gels more than 3.4 ounces from being carried on planes. For peanut butter lovers, this presents a real bind. While some manufacturers make one-ounce squeeze packets, they are expensive and wasteful.

Bell Plantation offers a travel-friendly alternative called PB2. This powdered peanut butter is made from de-fatted, dehydrated peanuts and comes in 6.5-ounce jars. Prices vary by store, but a case of four jars costs $15.96 on the Bell Plantation website.

PB2 is a portable, shelf-stable peanut butter alternative; once mixed with water it better resembles its more traditional counterpart. PB2 has a mild taste and light, creamy texture — it lacks the stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth feeling that comes with real peanut butter.

PB2 also contains less protein — four grams versus seven — and considerably less calories and fat than its more decadent kin. While the calorie savings are appreciated, it is difficult for powdered peanut butter to measure up taste-wise.

Although it may not be as satisfying to eat out of the jar, PB2 is ideal for baking. Cooking with PB2 is a much less messy experience than working with regular peanut butter. Bell Plantations also makes a chocolate version, which works well in smoothies and desserts.

Overall, PB2 is convenient for travelers who need to get their peanut butter fix but not a satisfying replacement for traditional peanut butter.
