On West Washington Boulevard in Culver City, a quiet bakery revolution is taking place. Despite its non-descript storefront, The Rising Hearts Bakery isreinventing the baked good by creating food that everyone can enjoy.
The bakery opened in 2009 and is committed to making baked goods without common allergens, such as wheat, dairy and eggs, with most items kosher and vegan. “It just makes sense to broaden your horizons as much as you can,” says Ursula Siker, kitchen manager. Siker began experimenting with vegan baking when she changed her diet and could not find suitable options in her hometown.
Rising Hearts caters to those facing dietary restrictions, but also attracts a crowd of people curious about celiac disease, veganism and kosher foods. Siker and other customers describe the baked goods as incredible. “It’s hard to believe they’re gluten free and vegan,” she says of the brioche bread. Rising Hearts products can be purchased in store — fresh or frozen — and is also used by local restaurants.
The bakery is bursting with breads, bagels, cookies, scones and all manner of sweet treats. Although many of their items are frozen, Rising Hearts offers a notable selection of fresh goods. The brownies are a customer favorite and Siker also recommends the blondies. The cookies, sandwiches and vegan cheesecake are also tempting options.
The bakery is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.– 6 p.m., with modified hours on Sunday. Although the lack of seating may be a bit off-putting, Rising Hearts Bakery is worth a visit —whether or not you have dietary restrictions.
