Fives Signs of a Shady Hostel

Tips / Travel

Finding the right hostel can mean the difference between a dream vacation and entering the plot of a horror movie. That’s why it’s important to do a little reconnaissance before committing to a good deal. Here are a few signs something shady is about to go down.

It Has a Bar

Hostels are infamous on the backpacker circuit for having somewhat of a party vibe, but a hostel with its own bar is taking things to a whole other level. It means there’s a good chance people not staying there are getting drunk just a few feet away from your room and your valuables.

It’s Far

Most reputable hostels are near the action. If you’re going to stay on the outskirts of town you might as well get a hotel. The further away a hostel is from the center of town, the more likely you’re going to get screwed.

No Lockers

Lockers, lock boxes, safes — hostels usually have some way to keep your valuables safe. If not, then it’s clear the owner has no concern for your wellbeing. Avoid any hostel that doesn’t have a safe place to store your goods.

Bad Reviews

If you see bad reviews online for a hostel, believe them. Backpackers aren’t exactly a high-maintenance bunch, so if they’re telling you something is off, there’s a good chance you’re better off booking elsewhere.

It’s Dirty

Though hostels are designed to be affordable, that doesn’t mean they should be gross. A dirty hostel is a great breeding ground for bed bugs and other nasty surprises you can pick up off a shower floor.
