Safety

Preparing for a trip can be stressful. What should I pack? Do I have everything I need? Did I make all the appropriate reservations? What’s the weather like in my destination city? Do I need to buy anything before I go? Those are just a few of the questions probably running through the minds of anyone preparing to head out for any extended length of time, especially abroad.

With all those bigger questions looming, it’s sometimes easy to forget general safety and travel precautions. Here’s a few things to always remember before you head out the door:

  • Check for any travel alerts and warnings for your destination.
  • Triple-check that you have all the necessary travel documents, including passports and visas.
  • Keep U.S. Embassy or Consulate information on hand at all times while you are away; these agencies are best equipped to assist you in case of an emergency.
  • Make photocopies of your itinerary and travel documents.
  • Do some research and familiarize yourself with local laws, customs and helpful phrases.
  • Don’t forget to double-check if your destination requires any vaccinations or immunizations.
  • Check with your insurance provider about coverage overseas; if you aren’t covered, and especially if you plan to partake in any extreme activities, consider adding coverage.
